Revisiting Utopia

The unlikely story of the Chicago suburb of Park Forest — the planned community studied by historians and national media like Time and Look magazines

SATURDAY, APRIL 25  —  with Cast and Filmmakers in Attendance
4:30 PM   |  Live Q&A to Follow  |  The Logan Theatre  |  Chicago

Children from south suburban Park Forest called race relations in their hometown “utopian.” Documentary filmmakers interviewed 70 current and former residents who grew up there to see if it was true. They found that despite some incidents of racism, virtually all of those kids said the racial harmony was real. They also discovered the town used social engineering, beginning in 1959 and continuing into the 1980s, to make it happen.

Featuring authors Will Cooley and Greg Randall, and former Park Forest residents: Kim Thayil of the rock band Soundgarden, Craig Hodges formerly of the Chicago Bulls, and Victoria Baecher Wassmer, a former federal official who served under two presidents.
